Brixton Justice March blocked by police - violent arrests

report from the street | 21.12.2001 20:47

Latest situation from Brixton 8.30pm Friday

A peaceful march of around 200 people held after a Rally and mass meeting with councillor Claudette Hewitt at Lambeth Town Hall has been blocked by police in riot gear on Brixton Road.

The march (more like a walk) had gone from Lambert town Hall through Angel Town estate before being aggesively blocked by police.

The police have made violent arrests and the march seems to be dispersing after the police intervention. Currently a group of young men are being surrounded by police and onlookers and other marchers have been violently pushed around.

An imc reporter said many people were completely shocked by the police behaviour.

The rally, meeting and march had been called by the Movement for Justice / Defend Alex Owolade Campaign.

(Owolade, a leading campaigner in the fight against racism and police brutality, is currently being victimised by senior members of Lambeth council management)
