Why did GB Brussels Campaigner back Blair ?

Befriedigend Furchtbar | 15.12.2001 15:27

On the BBC World Service 'Europe Today' programme (friday, 17:00 GMT), they did at least cover the demonstration (unlike the TV news).

However, they managed to find a very strange spokeswoman from the Anti-war co-alition to interview, who started babbling on about our own local concerns like the NHS and the railways (not entirely relevant to overseas campaigns!) and even worse, lapsed into a rather banal 'Anti-Americanism', the type which seeks to absolve British imperialism. 'America is bombing Afghanistan', she kindly informed us, 'and Bush ignored Tony Blair's warning about military intervention'. (I Paraphrase)
Right then, nice clever Tony is trying to save the world from mad, illiterate Bush, it would seem. Except that, as in previous conflicts, (WW2, Vietnam, etc) the USA relies HEAVILY on British bases to complete its logistical sorties (bombing raids).
We have to ask a few questions . Who is this woman? She gave her name :I think she's SWP, but I wont embarrass her; perhaps she could explain. What kind of campaign tries to exculpate warmongers at every chance and bother international actions with our own infrastructual diffi culties?

Brussels spokesperson likes Tony Blair?

15.12.2001 20:20

I didn't hear the BBC World Service piece in which a Brussels demo spokesperson appeared to absolve Tony Blair from being the warmonger he is, by saying 'Bush ignored Blair's warning about bombing Afghanistan' - but, let's remember we are a very broad anti-cap, anti-war movement for peace and global justice. Quite possibly someone may be part of the movement and still have some vestige of hope in Blair, though others of us may find that a bit hard to swallow. We must remember to discuss and patiently explain, not simply to dismiss.

They got her from 'Rent A Token'

The BBC probably got her from central casting or 'Rent A Token'. You don't think they'd allow real protesters on their sho do you? Heaven forbid! If they did, how could they tell more lies and misrepresent the movement?

Incidentally, the Guardian should be put on the Mayday Monopoly board......
