NY Plane Crash - What are the risks?

What are the risks of a crash? (i) living in an area that is within the crash zone when something malfunctions (ii) lax airport security leading to the risk of a crash.
Within 2 months plus a day to the crash on the twin towers of the World Trade Center a crash on Queens. An Airbus should survive the loss of one engine which indicates something more than an engine loss occurred.
Farnborough Airport, a business airport southwest of London, illustrates only too well the two areas of risk.

Residential Farnborough lies immediately at the end of the runway, aircraft literally skim the rooftops as they come in to land. The local residents live with the daily fear of a crash and every time a crash such as that at Queens occurs they relive their worst nightmare. The government has estimated a 25% risk of a crash within the next ten years. The worst case scenario would be a fully fuelled Boeing Business Jet crashing on takeoff (Boeing 737 with a Boeing 747 fuel load of 35 tonnes) on the local college which lies at the end of the runway. 600 dead would not be an exaggeration. Recently the streetlights on the main road between the college and the runway have had to be lowered, as they are an obstruction to incoming jets.
The second risk is the piss poor airport security. In the US hold baggage is not routinely x-rayed as it is in the UK. Leaving airport security in the hands of Securicor leaves a lot to be desired. At Farnborough there is no airport security. It would be all to easy to hijack a plane and within ten minutes down it on Downing Street, the official residence of Tony Blair. In the US the FBI have been warned off the Saudi connection. Farnborough Airport too has a Saudi connection which may explain why everyone is turning a blind eye.

So far for the people of Farnborough we have been very lucky, but our hearts go out to the people of New York, especially the police and fire fighters who tonight are experiencing a double tragedy.
David Blunkett (Home Sec) is poised to declare a State of Emergency in the UK. This has less to do with the war on terrorism and more on attacking hard won civil rights.

Survive engine loss?

OK, maybe you know more about this particular plane than I do, but while airliners are usually able to keep airborne (ie: keep flying) if they lose one of two engines I don't know of any designs that could blow an engine during takeoff and survive. That plane will be at a very steep climb attitude and will "stall" without anything like sufficient altitude to recover.
