BUILDING BRIDGES: YOUR COMMUNITY & LABOR REPORT IN EXILE
produced by Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash

presents a Special Program
International Labor and the War in Afghanistan

The WTC attack was a deadly crime which led to the death of thousands of innocent people most of whom were workers in the complex. We are witnessing in response another crime leading to the deaths of more innocent civilians. But, this time the victims are in Afghanistan.
When President Bush and the US went to War with Afghanistan the American public supported the War overwhelmingly. Once the action was announced, the AFL-CIO ‘s President John Sweeney almost immediately announced the Federation’s support. While a minority of unionists objected, the US labor movement quickly fell into line behind the President. While most of the world’s governments have supported the war to some extent or another, many of those same country’s unions and federations of unions have dissented. While there is no sympathy for the terrorists who destroyed so many lives at the WTC, there is concern for the innocent lives already lost as well as those to be lost if the war is allowed to continue. There is also growing concern for the economy as the number of unemployed grow day by day.
To explore the positions of a number of key unions and federations across the globe, we present:

Jeremy Dear, an Officer of the National Union of Journalists in U.K.
Hassen Lorgat, Press Sec’y of the Congress of So African Trade Unions
Karamat Ali, Ed. Sec’y of the Pakistan Workers Confederation
Walter Johnson, Sec’y-Tr. of the San Francisco Central Labor Council.
