Woman Sentenced to Death by Stoning in Nigeria, Protest at Nigerian Embassy (Du)

A protest was held to protest at the sentencing to death of a woman in Nigeria under Sharia Law for becoming pregnant outside marriage

A protest this lunchtime took place at the Department of Justice on St. Stephen's Green, Dublin. The protest was called by Residents Against Racism (RAR) in response to the sentencing to death by stoning of a Nigerian Woman.

The woman is from the North East of Nigeria which is under Sharia Law (A harsh Islamic fundamentalist law). She was sentenced to this brutal death because she became pregnant outside marriage. Her partner was released after a short custodial sentence. The protest took place at the Dept of Justice to highlight the actions of the Minister of Justice, John O'Donohoe. Who recently signed a treaty to allow deportations of asylum seekers between Ireland and Nigeria easier.

After speeches from Joe Higgins TD (Socialist Party) and 2 representatives from RAR, the protest marched to the Nigerian Embassy were a letter of protest, adressed to the embassador, was read and handed in. In his speech, Joe Higgins spoke of the hypocricy of the establishment in there attitude to the Taliban's treatment of women, compared to their attitude towards the Nigerian government's treatment of women.
