Over 2500 on brillant Anti-War march in Manchester

Richard Searle | 03.11.2001 17:33

Brief report on manchester Anti-War demo on Saturday 3rd November

Over two and half thousand people marched through Manchester on the biggest peace demo for over ten years. The March was organised by the Greater manchester Coalition to Stop the War.

The march brought together peace campaigners, trade unionists, members of Manchester's Asian and middle eastern communities, Green Party, C.N.D., Socialist Workers Party, the Labour Party, Students, Socialist Alliance, Globalise Resistance and many other Stop the War groups that have sprung up around the city in the last few weeks.

The march grew in size as it went through the city centre. The march stopped in St Annes Square and held a minutes silence for all victims of conflict and war.

Despite the rain ( so Manchester), there was a brillant atmosphere on the march.

Look out for further postings on Indymedia from the Manc'r STW Coalition of photos and videos of the march over the next few days.

Special thanks to the all drummers, musicians and the Samba band, and those who brought their pink, fluffy tank on the march

See you all in London on the 18th November

My report on the Manchester demo has been pulled for some mysterious reason along with the photos that went with it. Here they are again.

credit where credits due....

sorry to be pedantic, but as the Samba band and Pink Fluffy tank got a mention, then it would be nice to acknowledge us on the list of people who came on the march. There were quite a lot of anarchist/Earth firsters as well as those mentioned above....

great march!

Saturdays march was a really good example of how a whole diverse range of groups can have a great demo together.
At the peace vigil in manchester when the bombing started it seemed like those who wanted to make long speches were battling with thosse who wanted to play samba and the people who had comew for a minutes silence may have been a bit disappointed.
butr saturdays march was fantastic! No one group dominated, the chanting and samba playing complimented each other and there was also a pause for a minutes silence in the city centre. The range of speakers at the end was almost as diverse as the march itself and for once they didnt go on for hours!
its a long way down to london for the next one, so perhaps the southerners might consider coming up north some time in the near future - menwith hill spy base is not far from manchester.......

Don't forget the narchs.

How COULD you forget to mention the narchs! After all they were the most important people on the march (oink, oink).

Uncle Fred wields his icepick?

Yay, go for it Fred! All these naive young things raving on about large, diverse peace marches; what they clearly need is a good dose of trot-v-anarch sectarianism to disperse their irritating enthusiasm.

Call to further action

07.11.2001 11:18

The Manchester University based SAW (Students Against War) call for all individuals and groups opposed to war to take action on December the 4th.
We call on everyone who can to take action against the war, whether that be organising a sit-in, teach-in, a poster campaign, handing out leaflets on market street, or doing something we haven’t thought of yet! As anyone knows who came down to the Manchester on Saturday the anti-war movement is growing! If we all give a big push together on one day we will all become more visible, this will both give us great potential for reaching people in the street, and will make it more likely what we get column inches in the main stream media. If your not in Manchester come along and get involved with SAW activity, or if you can't make it organise a solidarity event in your local area.

Let us know what your planning to do (so we can handle the media with some sort of unified front) or if your coming to Manchester contact SAW at stopworldwar3 @ hotmail.com (this is our groups email address but we will be setting up an account specifically for this event over the next few weeks.)
