Bristol Anti-war rally

Several hundred people took to the streets of Bristol on Monday 28 and marched through town. Traffic was blocked and a peaceful rally was held opposite a Boer war memorial

Up to 300 people gathered at The Triangle in central Bristol recently as aprt of the city's on-going pro-peace campaign.

Several hundred people had been gathering for the daily vigil which is held outside the Hippodrome Theatre in the heart of Bristol's commercial district when they took to the streets and marched up nearby Park Street. Despite the fact that local police had been informaed that the march would set off at 6pm officers did not arrive until about 6.20pm by which point the demonstration was already in full swing and had brought rush-hour traffic to a standstill.

There were some ugly scenes when irate car-drivers and bystanders began to insult protesters with taunts of 'traitors'. At one point several men - who had been waiting for a bus - began shouting at a protester who had tried to engage them in debate about the merits of war for Afghani people. A police officer was forced to placate the situation.

Overall the event was greeted as a success by campaigners and there was a widely-held setiment that the inconvenience thrust onto car commuters is minimal when compared to the suffering of innocent Afghanis who are suffering as a result of US/UK lead air attacks.
