Malvern Protest

23.10.2001 14:54

Well as I couldn't find any demos that others had arranged locally I had my own.
It consisted of me, a large sign with "STOP THE WAR" on it in red and er that was it.
Being by myself ruled out direct action so I er stood at the enterance to an MOD research facility (DERA or QinetiQ as it is now) for half an hour. I was promptly approached by security staff (not sure if they were police) and had my bag searched and name taken as well as being questioned as to my intentions, I'm not sure if I had to agree to do this but at 8 on a cold morning I really didn't want to argue. And they have my name, photo and address on their database anyway (I had been in their the previous evening for something unconnected...). As for responses I got 4 positive (2 friendly nods, 1 clap and 1 thumbs up) and only 3 actively negative (one "get a job!", one middle finger and one fuck off). The couple of thousand of people other than that either frowned or gave me a bemused smile.
Don't think the states quaking now but it's appeased my conscience for the day and it's shown that at least 1 person in Malvern opposes the war. Hope you get more for the CND march in London...
