Catholic Worker exclusion

Moana Cole | 21.10.2001 01:43

Three or four para's re Catholic Worker exclusion from Anarchist bookfair.

Ironic that those calling themselves anarchists have set themselves up
as the self appointed gatekeekers of anarchist thought.
How unimaginative, how boring, how ignorant.

If they crawled out of their self referential holes and bothered to do
some research themselves, they might havediscovered the richness of
Catholic Worker praxis.
I emphasise praxis because I wonder how many anarchist movements at the
bookfair will be sharing how to fund themselves through cooperative
labour, live and work with the poor and confront those institutions that perpetuate
injustice.
I submit a movement that is able to these things is invaluable to the anachist
struggle and movement.

But like fundamentalists (Christian or Athiest), they are threatened by
intellectual challenge and don't want to believe there is any other
model.

Their lack of vision, research and inclusiveness makes them irrelevant
to the struggle for freedom and justice in the world.

catholicism is oppressive

i'm not that familiar with it but i understand that CW does 'a lot of good work'. good. but catholic
attitudes towards abortion and same sex relationships make them anti-libertarian and oppressive, and therefore cannot realistically be a part of the ananrchist movement.
so get over it!
love and rage...

Misinformation by catholic worker

21.10.2001 12:51

I heard about Catholic Worker wanting a stall at the
anarchist bookfair. Apparently and email was sent back from the anarchist bookfair organisers asking for
there opinions on certain issues like original sin, abortion..etc. They didn't reply. Perhaps someone
involved in the @ bookfair can confirm this. But one
thing that is certain was that they didn't get banned from the @ bookfair, they didn't reply to the questions
about there views.

Catholic workers - publicity stunt?

I wasn't involved with the ABF, but I understand also that cw wasn't denied a stall at the bookfair, but that they, when asked for clarification on certain issues didn't reply, and instead started circulating smears against ABF, and british anarchist movement in general.
I have seen several emails between bookfair organisers and cw, the last being an assurance by the guy from cw that he would stop these smears, and post out a more balanced view.
Don't know whether he was lying (now surely catholics don't lie do they?, or just hasn't got round to it.Apparently he is in middle of a book publicity tour, but surely as a good god fearing christian boy he wouldn't be courting controversy for his own ends?
Apparently(?)cw do soup kitchens for 'poor people'etc.
Hope people receiving food are not expected to thank a god for it. Because that would really be taking the piss wouldn't it!

Somehow I wonder if you would use the same broad brush dealing with Islam Judaism or Hinduism...

For the record, it would appear from the CW's literature that some of them are openly gay. (as am I but I'm only an admirer, not involved). Certainly they have published good articles against homophobia particularly in the church.

They also believe in a seamless garment philosophy of respect for life. Dorothy Day the founder had an abortion earlier in her life.

Do find out about their work. Even if you're not into the spiritual side, their integration of political theory and action and personal responsibility is a wonderful example for all.
