Qatar dismisses WTO security fears
Charlotte Denny Thursday October 18, 2001
The Guardian

The tiny Gulf state of Qatar declared last night that it was determined to go ahead with plans to host a meeting of the World Trade Organisation next month, dismissing suggestions that security fears will keep European and American diplomats away.
The oil-rich state has spent about $30m preparing for the talks on a new round of trade liberalisation, the first since the WTO's meeting in Seattle saw riot police battle protesters on the streets.
Since the US began bombing Afghanistan, trade negotiators have voiced increasing concerns about Qatar's proximity to the warzone. A final decision will be taken by the WTO's ruling council.
Meanwhile meetings of the key International Monetary Fund and World Bank committees, postponed after the US attacks, have been re-scheduled for Ottawa on November 17-18. The talks will examine ways of boosting growth.

From Washington to Ottawa

The Worldbank / IMF meetings in Washington DC had been cancelled after the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon on 11 September. Up to 100,000 people had planned to protest against the conference. Instead, there were large anti-war actions around the original conference date (see the "World" section on this site).
