massive anti-war meetin in Sheffield, England

Wednesday night saw the biggest anti –war meeting in Sheffield yet, in what may be the largest meeting for many years, over 350 people crammed in the ballroom of the Grosvenor House hotel for a meeting organised by Sheffield Coalition Against the War. The audience heard from a particularly varied panel of representatives: This included a Methodist minister, an activist from the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, The Green Party. Socialist Worker and C.N.D. This was followed by a wide ranging discussion including one contribution from a local man just returned from Pakistan, who informed the audience of the rising tide of anger against the West as a result of the bombings. Another contribution from the floor highlighted the sidelining of the anti-war movement by most of the national media, particularly the B.B.C. who he noted, we pay for through the licence fee. The turnout and enthusiasm bodes well for the future, on the proviso we can maintain a democratic non-hierarchical and open organisation.
