Latest reports: 16 people arrested

Latest reports from outside Pearse Street Garda station (about 10pm), sixteen people were arrested during the anti-PPP protest outside the Burlington Hotel in Dublin this evening. Nine are being held in Pearse Street, six in Ringsend and one in Donnybrook (these figures have not yet been confirmed however).

A crowd of approximately 60 people converged outside Pearse Street Station and called for the release of the arrested protesters. The senior Garda on duty told the crowd that the arrested people were going to be detained over night.

Tomorrow morning at 10.30am they are all to be charged with Public Order offences in the Dublin District Court (if there are any IE Indymedia heads reading this who are free tomorrow, please try and get down there).

Just released on Bail

11.10.2001 14:57

Hi just released on bail along with the others who were arrested last night. Nobody suffered much harassment in the station except for being woken up in the middle of the night and laughed at frequently. Many of us were bruised and bloodied by the baton charge. Many of the police, some in plain clothes, used wooden batons (ie- big sticks). We are all charged with public disorder, one is charged with carrying an offensive weapon (a penknife) and another is charged with trying to steal a policemans radio. In fact the policeman was using the walkie talke to split open the activists head. He had to be taken to hospital where he recieved six stitches. We are back in court next thursday and will be pleading not guilty to all charges. Ten of those arrested were members of the Socialist Workers party, one from the WSM (platform anarchists) and the others Globalise Resistance and/or independents.
