Bristol anti-war campaign builds support

Bristol anti-war activists have maintained a peace vigil in the city centre every evening since the New York attacks were carried out. The recent bombings of Afghanistan has seen even larger numbers of people joining the daily event.

About 100 people gathered in the Bristol rain yesterday (Monday) as part of an on-going peace vigil which has been held in the city centre every evening since mid-September.
Bristol Peace Group (BPG) - an umbrella group formed to provide a platform for anti-war action - has seen numbers swell since bombing plans were put forward by the US and the UK. BPG have reported a consistently positive response from a majority of the public who have expressed their support for the campaign.
Recently the BPG peace vigil saw two indigenous people from Latin America stage a peace ceremony while campaigners collected signatures and provided a space for impromptu discussions about alternatives to war.
On Sunday 7th, when bombing began, musical artist Nitin Sawhney performed at a venue in Bristol. The impressive visual backdrop - which is part of his show - was altered by the artist and his creative team to include TV images of the bombardments in Afghanistan.
BPG are vowing to maintain their vigil and will hold a solidarity action for the CND demo in London this Saturday with people in the south west.
