Thousands protest in Washington DC - sat 29th

Thousands of people have been protesting in Washington DC in an anti-capitalist and anti-war demonstration. This coincides with what was to have been the start of the IMF / World Bank meetings which were cancelled after the US attacks. Many organisations pulled out of the protests before the meeting had been officialy cancelled.

Some recent news as of 2100 hrs gmt approx:


3:29pm EST THe IAC march is marching down Pennsylvania and is currently at 10th and Pennsylvania. Bread and Puppet theater are doing puppet theater. Police have taken off their riot gear.

3:08pm EST Demonstrators at Freedom Plaza are going to begin marching from 13th and Penn towards the Capitol in a few minutes.

3:06pm EST At Freedom Plaza, there's a "mellow vibe" and an "energetic, happy" atmosphere, according to An IMC reporter. There are lots of signs and flags, and some big puppets. People are watching the speeches, pro-war demonstrators are standng on one corner talking with people one-on-one, and there is generally not much conflict. There are thousands of people at Freedom Plaza -- estimates range from a couple thousand to 10,000 -- but we do not have definite estimates.

2:39pm EST The rally at Freedom Plaza is going on right now; people are giving short speeches. Everything seems peaceful. The ACC demonstrators either joined up with the rally or went their own way safely. You can watch the rally live on C-Span.
