Saturday 22 Sep is European CAR - FREE DAY
RoR | 17.09.2001 11:17
At least three areas of London and possibly other parts of the country will close the streets of their towns and cities as part of European Car Free Day.
In the Shoreditch area of Hackney the horrible Curtain Road section of the one-way system will be closed for cars and open to music and street entertainment including The Chinese Elvis and The Chalkwell Ladies Drum and Bass League.
In other parts of London, the Seven Dials area of Covent Garden will be closed as will a part of Brixton

If it wasn't why don't the local authorities who block these roads from traffic for one day, make them car free everyday of the year? By giving us a single car free day they hope that we won't be bothered trying to reclaim the streets throughout the rest of the year.
The freedom to occupy the streets without fear of being maimed by motorists is something we've got to stuggle for and win through taking direct action together. Without this struggle all we'll get is these patronising gestures.
