Press release from the UK Disabled people's Direct Action Network (DAN) about this weeks 3 days of direct action in the midlands.

BIRMINGHAM FREEDOM ALLIANCE

PRESS RELEASE

MONDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER

VICTORIA SQUARE, BIRMINGHAM - 1PM.

DISABLED PEOPLE TO LAY WREATH OF CONDOLENCE IN VICTORIA SQUARE FOLLOWED BY A RALLY FOR THEIR FREEDOM IN THE "FREE WORLD."

Disabled people from Birmingham and their supporters from around Britain will be led by Cassie James, a leading disability rights activist from the USA, to offer their condolences to the families of the people who have died and have been injured in the horrific events of the last week.

The rally and 3 days of non-violent direct action in the West Midlands, planned before the tragic events in the USA, will go ahead to highlight the persistent inequalities that are faced by disabled people.

Over two years ago DAN (disabled people's Direct Action Network) demonstrated in the Council House. As a result the Leader of the Council, Albert Bore, promised to work with disabled people and support the disability rights agenda..

Disabled people are asking Council Leader Albert Bore to keep his word and commit resources to an Independent Living Centre for disabled people in Birmingham. We are asking for a public announcement to this effect to be made by the end of September 2001.

Disabled people from a wide range of groups have worked together with the Council towards this aim. We have consulted, we have discussed, we have been to many meetings, we have undertaken a feasibility study.

We have created a vision and a plan.

Now it is time to stop further delays and make it happen.

Why?

¨ Because an Independent Living Centre will ensure that disabled people have their right to live in the community protected and upheld.

¨ Because millions of pounds of public money is being used to lock away and keep disabled people in badly run institutions that deprive them of their most basic freedoms.

¨ Because sidelining disabled people in the political process is no longer an option.

On Monday 17th September, The Freedom Alliance and DAN will be challenging those Council Members and Officers who are trying to undermine and block this plan. Tactics of non-violent direct action will be used.

Action has commenced by lodging a formal complaint against the Head of Occupational Therapy Services. We are demanding an apology for misleading and inaccurate statements.
