Food lobby forced PM into
u-turn on plan for vaccination
Guardian is reporting that,
"Nestlé, the world's largest food
company, led a powerful business
lobby which persuaded Tony Blair to
halt an advanced plan to go ahead
with vaccination against foot and
mouth."
This comes a no surpirse to
anti-Nestle groups. The article
continues, "Mr Blair announced
that vaccination was the best option
but within days the industry, led by
Peter Blackburn, the then chief
executive of Nestlé UK, had forced
an about turn. The last minute
retreat surprised everyone at the
meeting, including Lord Haskins,
chairman of Northern Foods and now
the government's farming guru. The
extraordinary events in mid-April
raise questions not only about
whether the right decision was made,
but over the power and influence of
big business on government policy.
