Alternative Ulster

Dan Brett | 04.09.2001 19:35

The immortal words of Sticky Little Fingers.

Alternative Ulster

Nothin' for us in Belfast
The Pound's so old it's a pity
OK, there's the trident in Bangor
Then walk back to the city
We ain't got nothin' but they don't really care
They don't even know you know
Just want our money
And we can take it or leave it
What we need

(Chorus) An Alternative Ulster
Grab it and change it it's yours
Get an Alternative Ulster
Ignore the bores and their laws
Get an Alternative Ulster
Be an anti-security force
Alter your native Ulster
Alter you native land

Take a look where you're livin'
You got the Army on your street
And the RUC dog of repression
Is barking at your feet
Is this the kind of place you wanna live?
Is this where you wanna be?
Is this the only life we're gonna have?
What we need is

(Chorus)

They say they've got control of you
But that's not true you know
They say they're a part of you
And that's a lie you know
They say you will never be
Free free free

Maybe this record should be re-released

05.09.2001 11:17

Maybe this record should be re-released. It would be appropriate during the present outbreak of violence. It came from a protestant group as well. The punk movement brought a lull in the violence for a while as both catholic and protestant youths met each other at punk gigs. It didn't last thorugh and violence returned to the province with the death of the hunger strikers.

Ummm???

Wasn't it...the STIFF LITTLE FINGERS???
Regardless, I agree that the situation in N. Ireland is absolutely ridiculous, yet so similar to the Israel vs. Palestine thing (but differing on "some" levels to be sure)
that the situations make you feel either a) Anti-terrorist
b) Anti-terrorist, or c) Anti-terrorist.
Well now, it seems that the same conclusion has been reached all around.
Anyway,(satire aside) whatever "side" you're on, the result is the same: hatred, pain and death.
STOP!!!

STOP!!!

No more pointing of the fingers.
No more attributing blame.
WE ARE ALL TO BLAME!!!

I live in the U.S.
It's my fault as much as it is yours.
It's time to wake up and accept our responsibilities.
It's time to hold "ourselves" accountable for what we've let happen in "our names."
Stand up.
Please.

follow bigots blindly and loyally

itz all very well to espouse yur high and mighty american condescending views. you no nuffink of the situation in ulster an irish county, part of ireland. to sit back in yur middle class luxury, comfy armchair and say them peasants are revolting, the peasants are revolting and we will continue to revolt everywhere and anywhere.'ghettoes all over the world look the same'carl williams enter the dragon. nazi scum are stirrin it up in glenbryn, grown men and wimin, and their petty bitchiness and bigotry, intimidating wee girls. catholics are not to blame for the residents of glenbryn's social circumstances, the residents themselves are to blame, they followed blindly, poor but loyal, buttoning their lips, never complaining when the brits dished out their meely mouthed share, happy wif their lot, and now they still cannot question or rebel against their brit masters, they blame catholic wee girls, convenient and defenceless scapegoats.

Ok.

Yeah, so ignorance is the determining factor.
Call me what you want (whatever it is you think you know about Americans) but the fact remains, everyone is at fault.
And NO the "wee schoolgirls" do not deserve the treatment they've been given,...but it would seem (and is clearly the case)that they're just caught in the middle of two sides who only seem to continuously attribute blame and point fingers at each other.
I'm not claiming to have any quick answers or solutions (and we all know that these are complex issues), but communication and dialogue...(not bullheadedness anger and violence) is most certainly a step in the right direction.
Thanx.

ulster

For a start ulster is not a county, it is a provence and 6 of the counties in it make up NORTHERN IRELAND WHICH IS UNDER BRITISH RULE WITH THE CONSENT OF THE MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION. THE SITUATATION IN GLENBRYN MAY NOT BE RIGHT BUT NEITHER IS INTIMADATING PROTESTANTS USING THE SHOPS AT ARDOYNE. CATHOLICS ARE VERY GOOD AT PLAYING THE WOUNDED OPPRESSED ANIMAL BY SAYING THEY ARE TREATED UNFAIRLY BY THE BRITISH STATE WHEN ALL THE WHILE TAKING WHATEVER BENEFITS THEY CAN THROUGH CLAIMING DISSABILITY- HOW CAN SO MANY CATHOLICS BE DISABLED COMPARED TO PROTESTANTS. IT IS ALSO NOT RIGHT FOR A PARTY REPRESENTING A SO CALLED ARMY TO BE ALLOWED IN GOVERNMENT PARTICULARLY IN LIGHT OF 1- COLUMBIA 2- CASTLEREAGH 3- STORMOUNT SPY RING. NORTHERN IRELAND MUST BE THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WERE THE ARE SEEN AS STUBOURNE FOR NOT NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS. FOR THE RECORD SLF WERE SINGING ABOUT OPPRESSION ON BOTH "SIDES" AS THEY ARE FROM A "BLACK SPOT" AREA, THANKFULLY NI HAS MOVED ON SINCE ALTERNATIVE ULSTER AND THERE IS ALOT MORE INTERGRATION BUT THE DEEP ROOTED TROUBLES IN MY OPINION WILL NEVER TRULY DISSAPEAR
