A 20 in Germany

Actions, demos, rallies etc. took place in more than 30 German towns and cities as part of the Global Day of Action on 20 August 2001.

All over the world people took to the streets exactly one month after the murder of Carlo Giuliani during the anti-G8 protests in Genoa, to protest against the massive police brutality in Genoa and to show that resistance against the global capitalist system cannot be killed. In Germany, actions took place in more than 30 towns and cities, ranging from street theatre and public film screenings to mass demonstrations.

These are a few examples of what happened:

- marks of corpses were painted on many streets, using white colour for the body-lines and red colour for blood, some of these actions were open as part of bigger demos, others happened secretly

- in Berlin, a squatted social centre "Carlo Giuliani" was opened (but evicted by police on the same day)

- Italian consulates and German party offices were occupied in many places; the occupied offices included parts of the large SPD building in Berlin (the SPD is the social democratic party which currently forms the government; the chancellor and the home secretary, both from the SPD, had openly supported the brutality of the Italian police); elsewhere, SPD party offices were attacked and damaged

- Slogans such as "Capitalism kills" were painted on big walls facing the harbours of Kiel and Hamburg

- "Black Blocs" (big cubes and, well, blocs painted in black!) were pushed though shopping areas and other parts of the inner cities; in some places they were handed in to the authorities "to end the violence of these disgraceful blocs" or subjected to a public trial; these actions symbolised the stupidity of the portrayals of a "terrorist organisation called black bloc" by both the state and the media

- big demonstrations took place in Berlin and Bremen

While a multitude of actions happened in bigger cities such as Hamburg and Berlin, people even got together in small towns to organise a rally or some street theatre. It is promising to see the long list of reports on Indymedia Germany.
