artilce on recent BNP activity and repsonse by swansea activists

The BNP ‘festival’ near Welshpool was designed to celebrate, and build upon, their electoral advances made in Burnley, Oldham etc. It failed. According to journalists at the camp, between 100 and 150 people attended on Saturday – possibly a third of last year’s attendance. These included none of the new forces recruited in Burnley, Oldham and Bradford. Why? In all of those centres there have been large-scale anti-nazi mobilizations since the General Election, beginning to cut the ground from beneath the hard-core Nazis. The ANL has been a significant part of this. A 500 – strong public meeting in Burnley made the decision to hold an ANL Carnival in the city. (It doesn’t help that New Labour is banning it. And all anti-fascists need to take time out to deluge the Home Office, Burnley Council etc with demands that the Carnival goes ahead).

The ANL protest in Welshpool was a success. It was built with the co-operation of local anti-racists. And there were many local residents there. The number of Welsh-speakers present bears testimony. And this was after our demo had been banned by the police! Compare that to the proposed NF demo that was banned in Birmingham the previous weekend. The NF were too scared to appear. The ANL held two successful stalls in the city that day!

If Nazi ideas and organisation are to be prevented from growing, the key to success is mobilising the maximum people from the area itself, beyond the ranks of the already committed activists. We must prove in practice that we are the majority, and the Nazis are the unrepresentative minority. This is true when we challenge their ideas asylum-seekers, Holocaust, immigration, multiculturalism etc.) It is even more true when we confront them organisationally, as in Welshpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Burnley etc.

The ANL did this. Many people in Mid-Wales now know about the viper they nurture at their breast. They won’t forget the sinister police road-blocks, with Nick Griffin and three of his goons telling the police who can pass through and who can’t. It’s unlikely that the BNP will be permitted to organise in this way in the future.

For the ANL to have bussed in coach-loads of hard-knocks from English cities would have been a disaster on all fronts. It would have alienated local anti-racists, preventing the growth of anti-racist organisation in mid-Wales. It would have vindicated the Home Office, the police and the spineless media, who all tried to paint the ANL as the mirror image of Nazi thugs.

It would have actively drawn resources away from the cities where Nazis hope to build on disillusion with New Labour. And it would have begun to present a ‘solution’ to fascism based on mobilising a militant paramilitary minority. This ‘ solution’ is an elitist one, and ultimately leads to passivity amongst the majority of anti-racists, who are unable or unwilling to transform themselves into street-fighters.

I am proud to say that at Welshpool, because of the way the ANL organised, no anti-racist was excluded from full participation. There was a blind resident on the protest; old and young people, black, white, even an A.M.! All the leading spokes-people for the antifascists, who conducted negotiations with the police that day were women. It was a fine platform from which to continue building the anti-nazi movement in Wales.

We'd love for you to see it but are experincing technical difficulties lodaing it onto the indymedia UK site. Have tried routing it through US site but same problem. Error reads more information needed but this info has been filled in on the 'publish' from. Anyone got any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Griffin shoots himself in the foot

30.08.2001 10:13

On the weekend of 11-12 August, the BNP planned a 2-day festival called the Red, White and Blue festival, aimed at presenting a respectable, patriotic face to the community and potential supporters around Nick Griffin's hovel in Llanerfyl, on the A458 in Powys. Griffin, who was convicted of inciting racial hatred in 1998, stood for election in Oldham West and sparked the worst riots for many years. He was later seen in Burnley the morning after the riots, looking for support.

Griffin's deputy has been found guilty of bomb-making and the London nailbomber, David Copeland was an active supporter of the BNP. The BNP have close links with the remnants of the National Front and Combat 18, and many would argue that the difference is hard to distinguish.

On the 11th of August, the Anti-Nazi League staged a demonstration in Welshpool and I tagged along. We were supposed to meet in Llanerfyl, near to Griffin's place, but the enormous Police presence kept us away and we were forced to make our way to Welshpool train station. We passed several roadblocks, manned by police from as far afield as Kiddeminster. When we met up with the ANL demo, we found out that Dyfed and Powis police were essentially acting as bodyguards and bouncers for Griffin's party. The BNP had been handing out passes to Nazis who were invited to the 'festival' and the police had been checking these invites at Griffin's request. All this at the taxpayers expense.

Many local people, many whom didn't know that Nick Griffin lived around there, showed up to support us. In Griffin's previous town, he had been ostracised by the community and had obviously kept his head down while living in Powys. A member of 'No Platform' - an anti-nazi organisation spoke to the crowd, explaining that he had been sent a copy of section 14 by the police, who clearly intended to intimidate him into not marching. He ended his speech by dramatically ripping the notice in two. We were not allowed to march down the street, and when a few supporters attempted to, mounted police were called in to push them back. An Member of the Welsh Assembly was present from Plaid Cymru and offered to negotiate with the police, who, she belived were collaborating with the nazis against our democratic rights. It was a shocking display of how the system allows despicable and evil people to spread their message of hatred.

Despite all this, our message was heard. On the way out of town the only topic of conversation among local people in the area was the presence of Nazis in their rural idyll. Whilst the police did their best to thwart the Anti-Nazi protest, Nick Griffin has truly shot himself in the foot. A dog doesn't foul it's own kennel, and by organising this ridiculous media stunt, Griffin has taken a great, big shit on his own doorstep. Local people are now alerted to his presence and, judging by the language we heard from locals today, he will find life in Powys significantly harder from now on.
