U.S. woman could face 15-year sentence in Italy

Susanna Thomas called her home in Warren, N.J., Tuesday morning from the Italian jail where she has been held since her arrest outside Genoa July 22, hours after the end of the summit of the major industrialized nations and the street disorders that swirled around it.

It was the first time her parents, Cathy and Rick Thomas, had heard her voice since she called them shortly before her arrest, saying she was leaving Genoa and going to the beach with some friends and then heading to France to catch a flight home.

The young woman's call Tuesday gave her parents and their older daughter, Helen, a welcome 10-minute respite in their 21/2 week ordeal.

"She sounded scared," Thomas said. "And she was concerned about the others arrested with her. She feels they're all innocent."

Instead of preparing for her senior year at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, Thomas, 21, described as a devout Quaker and an ardent foe of the death penalty, is facing a possible 15-year sentence.

The charge against her is conspiring with a group to commit devastation and plundering during the Genoa meeting, said the family's lawyer, Dick Atkins of Philadelphia. Atkins called the charge ludicrous.

He said Thomas, who had e-mailed her parents that she was avoiding the rowdy demonstrations in Genoa, left town afterward with 25 members of an Austrian protest group called Publix Theatre. Most were on a bus, the lawyer said; Thomas was in a car.

There is still about 50 humans in the prison - mostly without reasons. Today is a new adhesion test date.

I hear that Hassan is home safe, which is good, but what info is there on others still missing - or dead?

There's news from Italy (La Republicca) of a woman pulled from a canal near Padova, last week Schnews had something on a body of a brit washed up at Genova beach but no one seems to have any more details... what's going on here? why don't we have fuller information ...?

I know some people wouldn't want their names publicised, but if there is already a wrong list circulating, can't we have at least a little more info on our own (possible) casualties?
