SHUT THE STOCK EXCHANGES

Anarchist Rioter | 27.08.2001 10:10

On November 9th 2001 (N9), the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is meeting in Qatar. As it will be impossible to protest at the summit venue (Qatar is a repressive police state), events are being planned around the world to stop the undemocratic activities of the WTO. Why not shut the stock exchanges for one day?

On November 9th, the WTO meets in Qatar. Our comrades in the US are planning a big action on Wall Street against the dominance of international finance capital, and in protest against the greed of the culture of paper speculation. The World Trade Organisation is the final nail in the coffin of democracy. Trade-Related Intellectual Property rights (TRIPS) and General Agreements on Trade in Services (GATS) are mechanisms of corporate control over publicly accountable bodies. If the WTO gets its way, the big multinationals will have unchallenged hegemony over our lives, and we will be powerless to resist. Stop the WTO before it is too late! We propose a day of radical action in the UK to stop the international finance capital. March on the city and shut down the stock exchange for one day! Show the workers that we are capable of effective and disciplined protest . . . perhaps we could have a "funeral for democracy", where everyone could turn up dressed in black? There is already a protest planned for the Qatar embassy on the day . . . we should link up with this action to create a London-wide network of activists . . . let's start getting some ideas thrashed out well in advance, so that we can attract the maximum number of people.
