Two victims

Two victims

This is a tale of two victims. Only one of them, so far, has a name: Carlo Giuliani. He probably wouldn't have called himself an anarchist - he probably, for that matter, wouldn't have laid claim to any political title at all. But whatever it was that brought him to the city centre on the day of his death, he declared his rejection of capitalism by that final, fatal act.

Carlo was 23 years old. The man who killed him was only 20. He was a poorly-trained conscript in the paramilitary Carabinieri. He was, by his own account (which we have no reason to disbelieve), terrified, maybe even in fear for his life. Yet now he might well face a hefty prison sentence for manslaughter.

In recent issues, Freedom has applauded those who stand up to oppression. And the front line in the daily oppression capitalism doles out is often provided by dupes (or conscripts) in uniform. It is therefore inevitable that our resistance will be often aimed at them.

This cannot be helped. But it must be a source of profound regret. Carlo, and the man who shot him, are both capitalism's victims. Both were failed by the bosses against whose rule Carlo was trying to protest. Two lives were wasted on Friday 20th July, not just one.

Nobody wants martyrs - but we need to realise that the state will not give up its power without a war. Therefore whilst it is right and proper to mourn we should realise that there will be much more in the long war to come. Not talking here about an elitist terrorist war bit the class war. FREEDOM - you need to get real about this and stop spouting off your idealistic and romantic notions! Love to all P

throughout history the elites have sent common people to fight wars on their behalf, the conscript who shot carlo is an example of this....BUT, while he may have been terrified, to shoot a fellow human in the head is a crime and he has to be partly to blame, the G8 leaders did not pull the trigger

Has anyone ever considered this 'young conscript'who had his gun pointing out of the back of the landrover for a minute or so,could of disabled Carlo by like shooting him in the leg or even in the arm arm so as to prevent Carlo holding onto the fire extinguisher??????? shooting twice to the face COULD have been avoided people!Let's not 'spread' too much pity by calling this cop a 'victim'!!!!

phil, the article does talk about the class war even if it doesn't use the term. how is it "idealistic and romantic"?

vine, nobody said the shooting should be excused or that the conscript shouldn't be held responsible for it.

entity, the article isn't about pitying him. it's about what capitalism does to us all. do you think he wasn't a victim of the system as well?
