March against Climate Change - London

Matt S | 28.07.2001 20:18

A 300 strong march against climate change walked from Lincoln Inns Field to the US Embassy today (28th july) to protest Bush's continuing refusal to face up to environmental problems.

A march called by the Campaign against Climate Change drew about 300 people today, walking from Lincoln Inns Field to the US Embassy at Grovesner Square. The march was livened up by a small but loud band (I believe they were Rhythms of Resistance), a travelling 'globe in a greenhouse' and a leading contingent of madly dressed nutters (only kidding!). As usual, there was a lot of gawping from passers-by, but quite a few were leafleted, and awareness and enthusiasm was pretty high by the time the march reached the Embassy. Perhaps the reason that the chants weren't quite as loud as usual lay in the fact that, after speeches by, among others, Jean Lambert MEP and Johnathan Blair, one of the recently released prisoners from Genoa, most of the march moved 100 metres down the road to the noise demonstration outside the Italian Embassy. The band had grown larger by that point, and the Embassy staff definitely knew we were out there...I only stayed for an hour, so I can't say what happened after about 3.20 pm...but as far as I know, all passed off peacefully, and with a lot of noise!

No Justice No Peace, Fuck the Police

After most people left and the remainder were chilled in the park what was left of the band reassembled as did everyone left outside the italian embassy. the police did not now what to do and most of the crowd control barriers had already been moved. The small group made a fairly loud commotion. The police flooded the area surrounded everyone with quite alot of needless rough pushing to the shock of some passers by. SO 3 Pig photography were having a field day! Not to mention the 10 riot police on horses who managed to make it to Grosvenor square by the time everybody really had left!!

We must keep the pressure on the Italian Embassy. There are still many missing people who cannot be forgotten. The Truth must come out. Just how many did the fascists really murder? Libera Genova
