unity to build the movement

Globalise Resistance action in Bristol

Around twenty people set up a stall and petitioned shoppers in Bristol's Broadmead today. Condemnations of police violence met with a warm reception, as shoppers made the connections between privatisation of health & education in Bristol, the video of the Wakefield copper assaulting an individual, and the brutal response of the Italian state to valid protest. Resistance is fertile for the growth of a really deep mass movement - Genoa is a turning point,as the very tiny number who slagged off the protesters illustrates. Most sympathise, as they did after the poll tax riot. And Thatcher hit the deck I think three months later; knifed in the back because she was provoking too much opposition. This time, Fini - and Berlusconi next. Direct action works.

yeah but...

Yeah but getting rid of the poll tax was just one small isolated thing, compared with what we've got to do. We've got to overthrow the whole corporate globalised system. How the hell are we going to do that? It's so DAUNTING, just the prospect of the sheer size of the task that's facing us. How the HELL are we going to do it? And you know what - capitalism has hydra heads, chop one of and another six sprout! I actually feel really disillusioned about the whole thing. We're never going to succeed. The western lifestyle is taking over the world. Local traditions and native languages and cultures are dying - we can't stop that. Just as we can't stop the extinction of species after species after species on the land and in our rivers, lakes and oceans. And the capitalist system, dominated by the big banks and multinationals and protected by NATO and soon to be protected by the pentagon's Star Wars program of which NMD is only the tip of the iceberg, is of such colosal strength that to all intents and purposes, it's invinsible. And regardless of what Susan George says, globalisation IS a force, just like gravity.

Seriously, I'm thinking about packing it all in and becoming a stock-broker.

sinister motives of SWP via GR

29.07.2001 12:37

the swp is doing the usual trick of entryism in order to recruit a whole new ruling politburo class from the anticapitalists, it would seem. the founders of the swp are either ill or dying. they need new blood, preferably not from the proletariat

What movement? No really...

If I believe in non-hierarchical organisation, how can I be unified with people who want to tell me what to do? Taking lots of people to Genoa without adequate training (& too many newspaper sellers) is not necessarily direct action
