my first message from the hospital

Marcus "Sky" Covell | 28.07.2001 19:00

just to say....

hello everybody! this is my very first post and i am doing it from the hospital computer in genoa. i am still very weak but today, the doctors took out all of the pipes and tubes and i have been able to take my first short walk around the hospital ward. i am enourmously taken aback by all the messages of get well and of solidarity and you all give me more strength every day. italy. indymedia, the doctors and the people of genoa have been extraordinary kind.
last night, i gave a six hour statement to state proscutors and a judge. i am now under the protection of the italian judicial system and cannot be deported. i have denounced the carabineri forces and the interior minister and will be bringing charges against the authorities for what they did that night to me in battitista. the few of us left here are asking the movement to demand the overturning of all of the deportation orders that were issued last week, so that all of the injured, tortured and arrested can come back and give evidence to the judge that is investigating what happened.

i must go now, but i hope to come back to the uk on thursday as soon as i have the strength.

in solidarity

Marcus Sky.

All power to you, Sky...wait til you're all healed up and then come back here with us and show the bastards at the FO exactly what we all think of them!

Many thoughts of solidarity for you at the Italian Embassy today,

Much peace,

good to hear you're on the mend!

28.07.2001 20:11

just got back from London solidarity demo, a lot of people i've spoken to, including many who wouldn't normally associate themselves with our movement are disgusted with what happened to u and others in Genoa.....even mainstream media!!!
there were speeches today from others who were beaten and illegaly detained and the overriding feeling was that, even though it might not feel like it now if you're laying in hospital, what happened in Genoa makes us stronger as individuals and as a group.....
and yes, the police broke up todays demo, taking pictures and videoing all those trying to stand their ground..... the fight goes on!

Sue the Bastards

28.07.2001 20:45

I hope those who suffered at the hands of the Italian Government will launch massive civil suits. Name the Government, the Police, and most importantly, the individuals involved, including the premier and his cabinet members, and the commanders of the police. Name everyone and everybody, Jane Doe and John Doe. Cast the net wide.

This will have two benefits. First, it will add enormously to the final tally of the costs of Genoa G8 summmit. When you add up security, advance window dressing, lost business during the summit, post summit repairs and clean-up, and then top that with a multimillion dollar lawsuit - well, that summit's going to end up costing them a pretty penny. And make any other city have doubts about hosting similar meetings.

Second, the stuff that will come out in pre-trial discovery will be things that the Government would rather not see the lght of day.

Sue the bastards! Make them pay and pay and pay! We should make post-summit law suits standard practice.

canadien

Best of luck to you, Sky!

28.07.2001 22:25

As one of the many nameless people who heard about the hideous things they did to you, I want to express my best wishes for a quick recovery. We here in Italy will continue the struggle. The bastards are getting nervous already.

As an aside, you may like to hear that in today's "il manifesto" a letter from a cop appeared, in which he said that while he hadn't gone to Genoa himself (because he agrees with the protesters), the stories his colleagues told him when they came back made him decide to take his leave and look for another job, because he doesn't want to be an enemy of the people. He ends the letter by paying his respect to the memory of Carlo Giuliani.
That's one more comrade we can count on.

H.

Hey Sky!

28.07.2001 23:28

Good luck Sky! Hope you get better soon. I know what it is like to spend time recovering in the hospital and how much you yearn to get back to be able to do all those things you took for granted at full health.

Take strength from the fact every day from now you will get better and healthier and every day the movement grows in numbers and strength.

Your comrades all wish you well and a speedy recovery!

In solidarity,

J.R.

29.07.2001 00:16

good to read you
good to see you on tv
good to know you're getting well

man, they've thrown so much shit onto them that to get out of it they'll need a submarine.

The truth shall prevail.

29.07.2001 00:19

The media tried to make an example of 'Sky' as though he was some sort of mastermind and instigator of riots, as a warning to others who dare to organise resistance. But the sheeple aren't being led by this propaganda anymore, they can see the attack on activists, for what it was, brutal repression.

Sky
We are having an undercurrents gathering this weekend and we are thinking of you! The attack on you represents the beatings that anyone of us could have received. Sorry it had to be you. You should be proud of indymedia as everyone has done amazingly well to keep the issues and anger alive in the public eye. Lets hope it creates real changes..Mend well and fast and see you back in blighty soon.

irishheads send their love to sky

29.07.2001 19:25

Hi Sky,

Myself and Leah and everyone else from Ireland who met u and worked beside u in GSF building are horrified at what happened to you and those in the school. We are taking y'r example and shoving this brutality under the noses of the lazy Irish media.

Everyone sends their love. Pretty much we all got home ok.
We played your voice to 300 people last night off a giutar amp and told them about you.

My mate Joe and a bunch of 200 people here linked arms a few days ago and shut down the Italian Embassy and forced the Ambassador to grovel and apologize.

Thats about it from the Leprechauns, elves, faries, culchies etc.

welocome back on indymedia sky

03.08.2001 08:55

I'm happy to hear from you. I allready listened to your bbc-interview and I was happy to hear your voice again but it was cruel to imagine you traped to a hospital bed with all these coppers around you all day long. Reminding this bad situation it's marvealous to find you better protected, able to walk and online again.

hugs from berlin.

Best wishes from the US

04.08.2001 07:47

Dear Sky:

We of IMC Print have been following your story closely. In fact, several of us were listening to Radio Gap and were in the J21 chat room as the IMC and school were attacked, and we heard the screaming and saw several of you being carried out. You might not imagine how many people around the world cried and sobbed at their computers! And then we listened to the GSF's press conference, more crying and sobbing. Later, listening to your interviews, we cried again but also so admired your courage and fortitude.

Thanks for all of your work, and thanks for sharing your experience with us.

If you ever want to write a message to the world via IMC Print, send me a note.

Best wishes,

Carrie
