Unhappy bosses in Chinatown, small victory for the New Diamond workers
Last Tuesday, the workers who had been served with an injunction to stop them picketing the New Diamond restaurant were elated when the High court lifted the injunction. The High Court awarded costs of £6000 against the restaurant owners.
The workers at the New Diamond had decided to stand up for their rights and joined a trade union. Three weeks later they were dismissed. Some had worked at the New Diamond for over ten years.
On Friday, the TGWU resumed the picket of the restaurant. The first picket, before the injunction, had been tremendously successful and the news had spread through Chinatown. Two Chinese workers had joined on the picket and the TGWU report scores of new enquiries about trade union membership.
On Friday, the bosses attempted to demoralise the picket by filling the restaurant with their friends and offering a discount. They were not happy bosses when only six genuine customers went into the restaurant.
