According to the NZ Herald Mr Buchanan is facing a death
charge because the newspaper'alleges'that he was somehow
involved in the jeep incident where Carlos Guiliani was killed??
This allegation has not been borne out by a study of the
photos of the incident.
Like the other sleeping people in the school on Saturday
night Sam Buchanan was subjected to a beating-described in the Guardian as a revenge attack by police. He is also facing a total of 4 charges, attempted murder; unlawful association; possession of a weapon and obstructing the police-like other people in the Global Social Forum Headquarters.
Sam has not been seen since being carried out on a stretcher
The NZ consul in Rome has not been permitted any contact and nor have his family who are desperate with shock and worry.
Fury at the maltreatment of a NZ journalist involved in the
Peace Aotearoa Campaign for "Drop The Debt" has angered the NZ public who have innundated national radio demanding the NZ Government warn the Italian authorities the folly of jeopardising a close alliance between the 2 countries.
They want Sam Buchanan to be released immediately into the custody of the NZ Consul in Rome.
New Zealanders have a wonderful relationship with Italy
following the American Cup campaign which saw a month long
duel between Italy and America in 1999. Italian yachtsman
have made NZ their home as they prepare for the next
America's Cup campaign. New Zealand rallied round behind
the Italians to repay them for the way Italy welcomes
New Zealanders when they visit. We have a bond of affection
because so many NZ families lost their sons, fathers and brothers freeing Italy from the fascists in World War 2.
