BRISTOL DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE ITALIAN CONSULATE
x | 22.07.2001 18:04
The repression in Italy has got completely out of proportion ˆ far worse than what we saw in Barcelona, Stockholm, Prague, Seattle or London. This is not simply a case of multinational oppression but financial oppression orchestrated by the big capital AND the state and its machinery: politicians, judges, police, military
The demonstrator killed in Genoa on Friday is not the first victim of the repression of anti-capitalists ˆuncountable people die over the world in their struggle to reclaim their dignity and basic self-determination. What is clear ˆas we saw during the anti-Poll Tax struggle, the miners‚ strikes, etc - is that even in our Œtolerant democracies‚ the police and the state are quite prepared to kill us if we speak out too loud.
The repression in Genoa has been about the brutal and random violence of the police - batonning, tear-gassing and even driving over demonstrators. If public opinion was scandalized on that first day, there was still more to come: yesterday (Saturday) the police entered the Indymedia office and seized all the equipment; in a country like Italy were the Prime Minister owns all the TV channels, independent broadcasting is banned. They have also seized photo and video cameras. Horrifically, the police then entered the school across the road, which had been turned into a makeshift hospital and where injured demonstrators sought some respite. After making the injured people and those caring for them line up against a wall, the police proceeded to beat the shit out of them! Most of them have had to be hospitalized and the injured counted 50.
Obviously this kind of brutality is not exclusively that of the Italian police and state, but of any capitalist, neo-liberal state. We oppose it and oppose the brutal repression in Italy. Demonstrations are happening all over the world, and in the UK in London, Manchester and Dublin ˆ that we know of.
COME ALONG TO THE BRISTOL DEMO AND SHOW YOUR SOLIDARITY

Please be aware that the Italian Consulate is no longer based at these premises and they haved moved elsewhere.
We stress that the above is a fact as of 7 Sept and any demonstration at these premises will be pointless as it will only affect innocent people with no connections whatsoever with the agency.
Regards
Anon
