Do they protest too much?
Politicians worry about growing public disaffection with the democratic process, but disapprove when summits such as the Genoa G8 inspire popular demonstrations, writes Simon Tisdall Thursday July 19, 2001

We demand self-determination

I know not everyone in Genoa and around the world agrees with this, but a sizeable number certainly do: We aren't asking or even demanding that our leaders sort out all the problems we face, instead we're gradually taking back the power over our own lives, both outside global summits and in our own communities. We refuse to exert power over others, and we refuse to let politicians and other 'leaders' exert power over us.

I had to say this, even while reeling from the shock of hearing the news of deaths on the streets of Genoa, although I am ashamed in a way to be more upset by this news than by news of at least 3 deaths at anti-World Bank/IMF protests in West Papua earlier this month.

Look after yourselves everybody,

Bob
