Immigrant march in genoa passes off peacefully

Marcus Sky | 19.07.2001 19:27

the immigrants march that took place this evening in Genoa, was peaceful with activists dancing in the street!

About 30,000 activists in genoa proceeded from Piazza Martinez at 5pm, towards the red zone. there was lots of singing and dancing in the streets as the demo winded through ever narrower streets towards the old part of Genoa in the port district. it is still continuing as i write this as many activists head for the convergence area on the coast. there were a few reports of scuffles outside a police station but noone was arrested. confidence is high in genoa that we can stop the G8 from meeting tomorrow

Writing from Genoa

OK, the march was pretty peaceful, but fuck, it was probably the biggest march I've personally seen. 30,000 seems like an accurate number. Locals supported us, the police looked like the idiots they are, and the vibe was creative.

The mood here is calm, but as I write this it is pouring with rain, thunder and lightening. Activists are arriving from all over the world, with a larg number simply sleeping outside due to a lack of space for them. Parks and stadiums have been allocated or squatted by protesters also. The convergence centre is "crazy, impossible to walk through" with at least 30,000 international activists in the space (probably getting very wet), the infoshop is full of banners and creative materials, as well as NDVA training and training to get over the fences created to protect the GHate. There also appears to be training against police baton charges, which everyone seems to be enjoying heartily.

Plans for tomorrow are finalised, and look like a plan of war. Things look set for the largest attack against the legitimacy of the G8 and capitalism ever.

Fuck the G8, destroy capitalism, for anarchism!
