EU threat to GM safety standards

EU Commissioners plan weakening of safety standards for GM food. Text and online action.

The European Commission is proposing to allow for increased contamination of our food from genetically
modified organisms (GMOs). In particular, current proposals will allow for the presence in foods of GMOs that have not even been approved as safe in Europe.

For example, GMOs approved in the USA, which has far weaker safety standards, would be allowed into our foods. This is totally unacceptable and weakens rules that have only this year been agreed in Europe.

Consumer choice and public safety is being put at risk. These proposals are clearly a result of pressure from the USA and the biotech industry to allow more GM products into Europe.

The Commission are aiming to publish their proposals for two Regulations (Traceability and Labelling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and traceability of food and feed products produced from GMOs) by 25th July (before summer recess). We are asking people to send letters to Byrne ASAP so that the Commission might take on board the views of Europe's concerned citizens in the final draft proposals.
