Climate change commuters occupy London train

undercurrents | 16.07.2001 16:40

Commuters refused to pay full fare for their train tickets, asking for reduced fares to reduce climate change.

As world leaders met in Bonn today to discuss climate change, Undercurrents video news recorded campaigners taking direct action. Boarding the 8.57am London bound train at Oxford this morning without purchasing tickets. activists called for a mass reduction in train fares.

As the delayed Great Western Train finally pulled out of the station, the campaigning commuters handed out subverted tickets calling for a 90% reduction in train fares to encourage people back onto the trains and off the roads.

Train staff tried to stop undercurrents from filming as passengers in each carriage read and debated the merits of cheaper travel.

Campaigners offered to pay only 10% of the full fare as they felt this was a reasonable sum. The protest continued into Paddington station in London and No arrests were made.

The entire train was leafleted by the http:///www.risingtide.org.uk campaign

Audio of the Climate change protest was used on BBC radio4 on "World at one" today

In Manchester, a bunch of picnickers 90%ed it on the Serco-owned tram to a park out of town to enjoy the last of the Manchester summer, leafletting madly as they went. Fuller report in next month's Loombreaker, Manchester's FIN ( loombreaker@nematode.freeserve.co.uk)
