Letter Bomb Explodes in Genoa
GENOA, Italy (AP) -- A letter bomb went off at a police station Monday, injuring one officer and raising tensions ahead of the Group of Eight summit here later this week.
Tens of thousands of protesters, including some who have promised violence, are expected atthe summit of the world's industrial democracies Friday through Sunday.

Interior Minister Claudio Scajola said the bomb was aimed at heightening tensions but that it wouldn't work.
''The state and the forces of order have steady nerves,'' he told the ANSA news agency, adding that the incident also justified the security measures Italy is taking.
The Genoa Social Forum, an umbrella organization of anti-globalization groups, also condemned the blast and called it an attempt to discredit demonstrators already gathering in Genoa for the summit.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, said Maurizio Riu, a spokesman for the carabinieri police in Genoa. The letter arrived at about 10:30 a.m. at a suburban station, Riu said. When one of the officers on duty opened the envelope, it exploded, injuring his hands and face. Riu described the officer's injuries as minor.

Italian news agencies said the letter was delivered by a young man.

Also on Monday, a bomb disposal squad destroyed a suspicious vehicle, a van that had been parked for several days in front of the provincial command station of the carabinieri in central Genoa. Riu said the vehicle was destroyed as a precaution.

Security is tight in Genoa, where thousands of extra police and soldiers are being deployed to protect the world leaders attending the summit. Italy also imposed border controls over the weekend.
