Anthropologists say that modern gods, like the WTO and IMF, demand drastically larger numbers of human offerings than even the most gore-drenched, butchering deities of earlier cultures. "This is interesting because—other than those followers of Islamic, Jewish, and Christian faiths with influence over national militaries—ritual sacrifice has mostly receded from the public eye," explains Dr. Elaine Burgess of the Hathawax Foundation Anthropological Institute. "It relies mostly on drunken death metal enthusiasts, secret orders of wealthy men who from time to time solicit unknowing prostitutes into their ceremonies, and the occasional cult suicide. Not exactly constant numbers you understand"....

this site is vaguely interesting but not as exciting as made out, and it doesn't say very much of all that could be said. Plus I don't think that China's 'strike hard' policy has much to do with the WTO, not compared to the human sacrifices (e.g. suicidal farmers in India) made in countries which have been much more devoted to serving the Bretton Woods gods for some time now...

another story that could have been mentioned is the burnt offerings of the 'foot and mouth' crisis... all those cows (i.e. capital) sacrificed to the British government's own devotion to (not free trade but) restrictive trade rules, which they brought in to obstruct trade in meat from Southern countries where f&m is endemic... and the cows had to be burnt (not sold and eaten) so as to keep the prices high - these poor cows are definitely being sacrificed to the great god profit.
