Thursday, July 5, 2001 - Start Audio -00:00 Dennis Bernstein w Jerrod Rice, community leader from Belfast, Northern Ireland.. Soon it will be the Protestant Orange \'marching season\'... a 19-year old Catholic man shot dead today. Two Catholic churches burned recently. The Protestant loyalist Red Hand Defenders (link2) (link3) claim responsibility for today\'s assassination, which they say was committed in retaliation for recent Sinn Fein electoral successes.. the young man was just elected to the city council in his home town.. -11:30 Dennis w Dorothy Boucants with an International Observer Delegation to Northern Ireland.. observers come during the marching season.. observers watch the marches.. Catholics want to protest the marches through their communities but fear both the Protestants and the police... bracing for the marches..-19:20 Dennis w Peter Eisner, director of the Center for Public Integrity, reports that the CIA gave Vladimiro Montesinos, chief of Peru’s secret police, $10 million in cash and hitech surveillance equipment. Montesinos now faces charges of corruption because of video tapes showing him bribing members of Peruvian congress. Montesinos is charged w operating death squads, murder, arms and drug trafficing and corruption. Montesinos was a CIA asset for many years... Eisner: we see a pattern of the CIA ignoring drug connections and human rights abuses of their assets. Montesinos was busy arming the FARC in Colombia, while the US and CIA was providing money to Colombia to fight the FARC. A completely corrupt system. Montesinos traded 10,000 AK47s weapons to the FARC for drugs.. compare the case of Lori Berenson.. by collaborating with people like Montesinos the US is aiding and abetting the drug problem in the US.. a whole netherworld of twisted alliances..
-37:10 Dennis w Christian Parenti, author of Lockdown America about Hugo Chavez the re-elected democratically-chosen president of Venezuela suffering endless bad press from the corporate media... he has doubled educational spending, health care spending.. putting the military to work on public works.. very very popular with the poor, with the people.. the light skinned elite are put off by Chavez\' dark skin and African heritage.. the real possibility of Venezualan military, CIA action against Chavez.. \'everybody above the rank of colonel hates him, everybody below the rank of colonel loves him\'.. the old guard is problematic.. Cuba sending doctors to aid the poor
