Angry crowds pelted sticks and stones at British military bases in Cyprus on Tuesday evening over plans to build a huge telecommunications masts at UK bases on the island.

A British military spokesman said 40 police officers were injured and a police station destroyed at the western base of Akrotiri. Eight of the injured were still in hospital on Wednesday.

The Last Mast

04.07.2001 16:00

Jack (the last) Straw said, the violence in Cyprus is unacceptable. However, the majority of Greek Cypriots think the "Satanic" radio mast being erected without consultation is what is unacceptable. It seems those "lawless" ones who think that they can run roughshod over democratic rights, are sadly mistaken. Maybe the police will now question why they have to be the ones who risk their lives to enforce these undemocratic policies...on Britains behalf.

The riot was provoked by the arrest of a Cypriot MP, Marios Matsakis, who is leading a campaign to halt plans to erect a 190-metre radio mast in the Akrotiri salt lake in one of the island's two British sovereign base areas.
