Salzburg: WEF Protests: Saturday 30th UPDATE

ran away to join the circus ! | 30.06.2001 15:19

Thousands of police officers from around Austria roam the streets of Salzburg today in cars, vans, and coaches, on motorcycles and with dogs.

The police are performing searches and identification checks on anyone whom they think might participate in tomorrow's demonstration against the World Economic Forum's European Economic Summit and Austria's extreme right wing government (for the latest (june) good report on the far right austria by antifa see  http://austria.indymedia.org/display.php3?article_id=308).

The combat grey clad officers usually travel in groups of ten, although course numbering into the hundreds are not uncommon.

The train station is saturated with police, clearly outnumbering civilians, with people being asked to produce their papers and being searched. People leaving the station are also being photographed. One Indymedia volunteer who was detained by police was threatened and told it would be best for him to leave the country (a report should follow). Reports have come in of increasing searches at the land borders.

There are less police at the airport but every passport or ID card is checked off against a list of known protestors names - the list is at least 7 pages of A4 long! - the section relating to uk apparently looked quite big btw.

Elsewhere police with video cameras drive around the city filming everyone in sight. Around the demonstration infopoint and counter conference there are scores of riot police parked in the street. Police have been filming outside the infopoint all afternoon as various workshops continue. The corporate media has also swamped the area and roam around looking for the subjects that fit their existing story.

Where ever you walk you see another squad of police vans passing every few minutes. Outside the conference centre itself all you can see are police. There are also police stationed on street corners complete with their riot gear stowed by the side of the road. Despite the huge police numbers Salzburg seems calm.

There is a sorted IMC space away from the main security zones and radio streaming should start tonight, oh and not to be outdone by the police the sun is really out with its hat on, about 27 degrees c :-)

The main march which was to take place tomorrow (sunday 1st) has been prohibited by the police, but a rally at what was to have been the starting point of the march is still legal. More than 5000 officers will be out on the streets tomorrow to repress any unpermitted political action....watch this space!
