Open up the borders

Call for symbolic action in support of Genoa and Campsfield actions at end of July

I am an economic migrant. As a white Australian with dual British nationality I have the ability to travel, work and live in the wealthiest countries in the world. I came from Australia to the UK and Europe to live and work in a country of my choosing.

Because of the colour of my skin and the birth place of my parents, borders across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world disappear or at least become insignificant hurdles. I don't have to hide in the back of lorries, fearful for my life, not knowing what lies ahead but knowing that what lies behind is misery and deprivation. I won't be 'dispersed' across the country, locked in detention centres like Campsfield in Oxfordshire and bullied by Group 4 thugs in squalid conditions. I won't be forced to live on vouchers which only equate to 70% of Income Support and Lord Sainsbury gets to keep the shopping change.

At the same time as governments around the world open up their markets to allow greater freedom of movement for business they continue to deny the same freedom to the workers.

In solidarity with the actions in Campsfield Detention Centre, No Borders Campaigns across Europe and the anti-G8 protests in Genoa, I am calling on everyone to make a small symbolic gesture of support for those that are denied freedom of movement.

As we cross the borders on our way to Genoa or other demonstrations throughout Europe we must boast of our 'economic migrant' status, be proud and assert our right to freedom of movement.

Print a T-shirt with 'Economic Migrant' or the like, on it and wear it across all the borders. Distribute information about 'refugees', 'asylum seekers' etc at every international airport, railway, bus station. When you are asked if you have anything to declare, declare your right to go where you want, when you want.

Open the borders. Close the Jails.

Know your enemy! Against vouchers!

29.06.2001 14:27

In Germany, activists launched campaigns against the supermarket-chains (and their affiliates) that took part in the government's voucher-shopping programme for/against refugees. The most spectacular event was a firebomb attack against a "Kaiser's"-supermarket in Berlin that burned down a couple of years ago.
I'm assume that similar campaigns happened in the UK, as well. Nonetheless, it would be helpful to name companies such as Sainsbury's again and again to make people aware of the dirty business those chains are involved in.
Who has those informations or where can they be found?
