Turkish state attacks public workers

"The Turkish government is preparing a draft law on Public Employees Unions which will have serious consequences for public sector workers.

If the law came into force, more than 400,000 public employees would not be able to be union members. Hundreds of thousands of public employees could not elect a workplace representative, banned in all but the big cities. The government could close down unions without any court decision."

The Confederation of Public Employees Unions (KESK), which includes five PSI affiliates, organized a protest demonstration on 26th May, to which the state responded with violence and summary detentions. Around 1500 public sector workers were arrested, beaten up, and hurt by police violence.
