Such a catalogue of defeats is hardly inspiring as a call to action. It is not inevitable that our world-wide movement should fail in the face of the concentrated power of Capital. If you want to find precedents for the anti-capitalist movement one hardly has to go back to the feudal struggles of mediaeval Europe. Better precedents lie in the triumphant revolutions that followed on from the mass literacy that flowed from the Enlightenment. It took counter-revolutions, either from without or from within, to overthrow these later, rational revolts against the unequal distribution of wealth and power. The mediaeval peasant rebellions, whether Hussites, Anabaptists or Luddites, were reactionary revolts that aimed at preserving a past way of life that had already become obsolete. They were rebellions driven by nostalgia. Our movement is surely different as our expertise in the use of the web shows. We are a movement that seeks to harnass technological progress in the cause of universal justice, an unprecendented project that has been taken up and crudely parodied in the current rhetoric of the World Bank, IMF and OECD. Our gaze is forward-looking, but unlike the Capitalists is not blinkered by an intransigent belief that free markets underpinned by absolute rights to private property can resolve the world's many worsening ills. Perhaps, therefore, the Jacobins, the Bolsheviks, the Maoists and the Zapatistas are more inspring examples for us to look for inspiration.

We've cancelled the WB and the G8 are scared to come onto land! They are running scared, they know that even the police are insufficient to save them now. What will they do when they want to meet up next, fly into a military fortress on an island?
Or maybe, just maybe I've figured out their reasons for wanting to make space travel more accessible...
We are coming to get you guys, enjoy the champagne while it lasts.
