some background info: The Campaign to Close Campsfield was set up in 1993 when Campsfield Immigration Detention Centre was opened at kidlington near Oxford. It's a kind of concentration camp, with 20 foot fences with razor wire on top and 42 video cameras, run by Group 4 for profit. Its guards are paid very low wages and many are brtually racist. Asylum seekers are locked up without trial, without time limit and with minimal rights to bail, sometimes for a year or more, on the say-so of junior immigration officials who do not have to give reasons, sometimes straight from ports and airports. Some of them later get refugee status. The campaign's aims are to close Campsfield and all immigration detention centres and to abolish racist immigration controls. We have set up Barbed Wire Britain, a network against all detention of refugees and migrants, to coordinate actions against the detention centres and prisons where currently more than 1,500 asylum seekers are locked up. The government is building more detention centres and allocating more spaces in ordinary prisons, and says it aims to lock up 4,000 asylum seekers by 2002. We hold demonstrations outside Campsfield on the last Saturday of each month from 12 to 2pm. From the May 26 demonstration we are planning to set up a protest camp, in a location to be announced, transport to be provided. Bring sleeping bags and camping gear (although there should be spaces in tents and yurts).
