Hackny fight back continues as town hall is temporarily occupied

Protesters entered the Hackney Town council on Saturday night and occupied it for a while until police arrived in massive numbers. Most of the evening was spent relaxing outside listening to a Samba band though they were carefully watched by police for a while who then left.

Then as the jubilant mood continued a few people made their way onto the balcony to the cheers of the crowd. Shortly afterwards the front doors were opened and many made their way inside riding bikes in the corridors and guarding the front entrance. The first Police arrived about ten minutes later and tried in vain to move the group away from the entrance, trying to arrest one man but the people held together, pulling him back from the police. They remained defiant until riot police came storming up the stairs, hitting everyone indescriminately and spraying pepper spray directly into the eyes of some of the protesters who were temporarily blinded by it. Having cleared people out from inside, the riot police quickly formed a line blocking the entrance. One protester said "I was trapped inside and they hit and hit really hard", his eye was already swelling. One woman was pushed down the stairs by the shield of one policeman and many people suffered injury.
Heckling continued for many minutes as the crowd voiced their anger at the treatment by the police, shouting at them the reasons why they did it. People stayed around afterwards for some time as the music started up again but slowly people decided to desperse.

This spontaeneous action was due to the drastic affects the councils cuts are having on the community which has seen many jobs laid off, nurseries closed and the privatisation of the waste management to Service Team to name but a few issues. There have been several strikes by workers in the council, the latest being on May 1st.
