PRESS REPORT

BRICK BY BRICK, WALL BY WALL, WE'RE GOING TO FREE MUMIA
ABU-JAMAL!

The US embassy in London has seen a series of pickets this year calling for Mumia Abu-Jamal's freedom. The latest,
Saturday May 12, was organised by the Mumia Must Live!
Campaign to mark the annual International Day of Action for the African American political journalist and activist, framed in the courts and on death row since 1982. Mumia is now waiting for Federal judge Yohn to decide on his retrial, his freedom, or his judicial murder. George Bush is a well-known enthusiast of the death penalty.

At the picket were Mumia supporters from the Anarchist Federation, the National Union of Journalists, Unison trade union, African Liberation Support Campaign, African United Action Front, IMF & World Bank Wanted for Fraud Campaign, SWP, Friends of MOVE, Latin American Solidarity Organisation, the anti-Pinochet Chilean community, Committee for Peace and
Liberation - Tamil Elam & Sri Lanka, Campaign against the Terrorism Act, New Communist Party, Spartacus League, the Railway, Maritime and Transport trade union and the TUC Race Relations Committee, Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism, and the Kyoto Campaign. Many individual supporters of Mumia attended.

Between chants of "Brick by brick, wall by wall, we're going to free Mumia Abu-Jamal!" and "Stop US imperialism!", speakers pointed out that Mumia is a political prisoner, that mass demonstrations for his freedom took place on 11 May in Spain, France and German and that the racist death penalty
effectively exists in the UK because of the number of deaths in custody.

The working class in the west needs to fight against
oppression internationally. Plan Colombia, a military assault on Latin American people, is an example of US state terrorism backed by the UK government, which has itself taken up repressive legislation with gusto, especially against asylum seekers. State terrorism by the western powers internationally includes the so-called Third World debt and the arming of governments in the developing world against those who resist them. US and western imperialism has for years waged a war against resistance movements in the developing world and in the diasporas in the west.

Steve of Friends of MOVE said, "We want to see Mumia out of jail and on the move." Alan Gibson of Mumia Must Live! stressed that we must be ready with action when Judge Yohn makes his judgement.

A demonstration at the Sheraton Hotel, Picadillly, London, against Plan Colombia is taking place on Thursday 17 May from 7.45 am to 3.30 pm. On Saturday 26 May, African Liberation Day will be marked by a demonstration at the UK offices of
the World Bank, Haymarket, London, from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm. Everyone is urged to attend.
