Refugee and migrant rights are threatened in the EU/US Summit in Gothenburg, Sweden (June 14th 2001). White overalls call for a mobilisation against plans of worsening the Agreement of Geneve (1951).
EU/US Summit in Gothenburg, Sweden
Gothenburg June 14th - 16th 2001
The contract of the refugee and immigrant rights (the agreement of Geneve,
1951) is being rewritten by George W. Bush and the leaders of the EU
countries. In the document called "New Transatlantic Agenda - Meeting with
US senior officials (Stockholm January 26th 2001)", it says: "A joint
EU/US declaration on asylum and migration (the "Gothenburg declaration")
to be made at the EU/US summit in June 2001 is envisaged which could
encompass topics such as respect for the 1951 Geneva Convention, the need
to design solutions for mass influx of migrants, co-development with
source/transit countries, improved statistics, asylum and non-state
persecution etc."
We believe that the goal of the European Union and the United States is to
"modernize" the agreement of Geneve. In practise this will mean more
repressed conditions for all immigrants and refugees. Already in the
current conditions hundreds of immigrants are dying every year because of
the policies of the European Union and millions of migrants inside EU are
regarded as second class citizens. We are asking everyone to mobilize and
to come to Gothenburg for the citizens' counter summit and to protest
these plans.
