Mayday 2001 - Oxford st section 60 - towards the end of the 7 hours - cops had started letting people out in very small groups but the crowd was surging in a quite frightening way - as people sustained crush injuries the cops pushed back with shields and batons - bastards. In the end they had to let people out because of the real danger of more crush injuries - SMASH SECTION 60!

Why did they keep people for so long

The police had no reason to keep people there for so long, there were enough police for them to march everyone down to Hyde Park and allow them to disperse peacefully in the park. They could have then blocked all roads leading back into the West End. Surely this would have been a much better idea than hold people for 7 hours in Oxford Circus.
