drumming up resistance: a mayday samba story

hubbub | 04.05.2001 01:13

On mayday morn, a posse of rts'ers, atherdonians, imc'ers, a few trans-nationals, and the rythms of resistance samba band, gathered at the squatted atherden community centre in Hackney to prepare for the days events.

Samba pacifies the croud

04.05.2001 15:57

I was trapped in Holles street with the Samba band and noticed that whenever the Samba band played, tensions dropped, and if it stopped for too long, the tensions built up. I'm sure the Samba band played a great part in preventing Holliers street from becoming a blood-bath like Oxford-Circus did. I often blew Samba-rythms on my whistle to help continue the music when the Samba band were having a break. My lips are still sore today (friday 4-5).

samba energises too!

Samba gives a crowd positive energy. I'm not sure that pacifying is the right term, although I totally agree that it releases tension. It gives focus to positive and assertive actions, and keeps yer warm in the cold and rain - thanx whistle blower for keeping up that good work when the sambista's arms were acheing! Heres to more dancing at the revolution.
