the truth about the wombles and mayday

via uncle bulgaria | 02.05.2001 18:59

Last night I was wondering across Wimbeldon common on my way home. As I passed the deepest, darkest, wildest part I stumbled across the secret head quarters of the notorious W.O.M.B.L.E.S. One of them gave me this to send out to the world:

...and the truth is...

The truth is, the very large majority of protestors were contained in Oxford Circus, turn out was very much lower than expected and the police did a pretty damn good job of containing just about everyone.

The scenes of violence pictured in the newspapers, the attacks on John Lewis (a workers' co-operative!) and the mindless stupidity on Tottenham Court Road totally undermine the aims of your organisation.

You also undermine the constructive aims of the more intelligent, peaceful protestors.

Stay at home next year.

The REAL truth

The real truth is that was a success. Indeed there will be more WOMBLES, more blac block and more people next time. The issues have been raised to a new level, new tactics tried, and new supporters reached. We were overwhelmingly non-violent, and managed to get 5000/6000 people onto the streets on a workday, in the rain. Had this day been a sunny one, I think we might have expected perhaps a thousand more people. Well done to all the WOMBLES; hopefully WOMBLES groups will form autonomously around the country, ready for the next bit demo!
