It was probably less the (non-existent) threat of violence by protesters than the massively over-hyped announcements by the police and the mainstream media about Mayday riots that caused many shop owners on Oxford Street to board up their shops. At least half the shops on Oxford Street were boarded up.

They should stay that way, who needs over-priced, sweat-shop fashions, who needs Nike Ticks?

it was brilliant to see the day go so peacefully. as i knew it would. the only trouble came from a bunch of boozed up kids cladded in nike and addidas and the police not the "dangerouse" wombles or anarchist spikey protestors. the samba band were great.
