On may day in birmingham, the first forty or so people to arrive at the assembly point were surrounded by police, who demanded that everyone move off to another site, well out of public view. Shortly after, fourteen people were arrested and taken to the police station where they were detained all day. Eight people are now being charged under a section 14, participants in a public assembly failing to comply with police conditions. The first court appearance was on Friday May 4th and all charged pleaded not guilty. Before being surrounded, protestors were able to talk to regional news television. Protestors not arrested demonstrated outside the police station and waited for the arrested to come out. Outside the court on Friday, a group assembled in support and banners were shown.
